Ultraviolet-Based Air Purification Solutions for Food Manufacturing Plants
Australian UV provides air and surface treatment units that use ultraviolet (UV) light to kill bacteria, viruses and mould to extend the quality and shelf-life of food products. The system features a fused quartz tube that generates a 254 nanometre (nm) UV wavelength that destroys airborne biological contaminants by penetrating the cell membrane and damaging the DNA structure. This method is recommended by the Centre for Disease Control (CDC). SterilAir® has 75 years’ experience in helping manufacturers control infection levels in refrigerated rooms, packaging areas and conveyors. The machines hold international patents and are available worldwide.
UV-based germicide for conveyor belt disinfection for transporting food products
sterilAir® is used to decontaminate the air, surfaces and fluids in processing plants. The T2018 unit is designed to be installed on conveyor belts to ensure food is not compromised in transportation. The system reduces microbial count between washing stations. This prevents the build-up of listeria, salmonella, campylobacter, enterobacteriaceae, e-coli and other coliform bacteria. The unit’s water-resistant structure makes it compatible with commonly used belt-cleaning processes, including high-pressure hosing with foam. sterilAir® T2018’s plug-and-play design allows for quick maintenance without downtime. The machine meets hazard analysis and critical control (HACCP) and US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standards.
Conveyor decontamination unit for food production facilities
The sterilAir® T2018 can be retrofitted to conveyors up to 1.4m wide. This flexible system allows two units to be connected side-by-side for larger belts. The system’s diagonal mounting stabilises the belt to prevent sagging and allows the unit to be positioned closer to the surface. Different tube and cable lengths are available, with an option to use dual-tube configurations. sterilAir® T2018’s fused quartz tube protects the UV emitter against cooling and pollution, as well as accommodates a reflector. This is designed to optimise the amount of UV energy used on the treated surface while ensuring energy efficiency. The tube is shatter-resistant, which meets FDA requirements.
UV air sterilisation systems to prevent spread of airborne diseases
Australian UV provides treatment units to prevent airborne infections and allergens from contaminating heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems in food production facilities. The company shares its scientific and technical expertise to end-users, product manufacturers and building designers to find a suitable solution that neutralises bacteria, viruses and mould spores, leading to an increased shelf-life of food. The sterilAir® UVC Air disinfection systems can be installed in the central duct of existing air conditioning units. Ceiling-hung systems are also available for processing room air disinfection and factories without a HVAC system.
Preventing growth of biofilms in food storage facilities
Biofilms and mould infestations on evaporators can contaminate the air in production and storage rooms. The sterilAir® UVC system prevents bacterial growth in hard-to-reach places that may be missed in conventional clean-in-place (CIP) processes. UV is environmentally friendly and is not a risk to staff or the equipment or food products being treated. sterilAir® systems are durable and low-maintenance, providing instant air disinfection in production and cold storage. The system can be used to upgrade existing air handling systems to remove up to 90% of black mould spores. The unit has a capacity of 700cbm/h working at temperatures ranging from -20°C to 35°C.
